Lockport Prairie Flow Monitoring
GRAEF became involved in a challenging project that expanded into the limits of flow monitoring possibilities in sensitive natural areas. GRAEF flow monitored four small streams, four concrete culverts and two linear ground water seeps at the Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve near Lockport, Illinois.
The GRAEF flow monitoring work was part of an overall effort coordinated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, aimed at studying this wetland area that is home to an endangered species of dragonfly. Water supply on the prairie had seen a decline in recent years, with a nearby golf course the most likely suspect. GRAEF monitored flow at the site to determine the levels of change during the seaons and with the start-up and shut-down periods of the golf course. Flows were also used to calibrate a surface water model.
