University of Wisconsin, Interdisciplinary Research Complex
The University of Wisconsin- Madison, in partnership with the State of Wisconsin, created the Health Star initiative to address the health care research and instructional needs of the campus for the 21st century. The Interdisciplinary Research Complex (IRC) is the third component of the initiative and will replace outdated facilities located throughout the campus with an integrated facility adjacent to the University’s health care services. The University’s architectural team retained GRAEF to provide site civil engineering services for this project. Site work design will include the abandonment and relocation of existing utilities beneath the proposed building, along with new utilities to serve the proposed facility, site grading, site paving, and the incorporation of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) to address the existing storm water management problems of the project area.
Construction of the IRC is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2005. The facility will be a multiple-wing, 450,000 square foot laboratory and office addition to the north side of the existing University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinical Sciences Center on the west side of the Madison campus. The new facility will contain research laboratories for the University of Wisconsin cancer center, molecular medicine center and provide significant space for consolidated imaging and vivarium centers.
The design of the proposed facility will require coordination and relocation of the existing underground utilities within the footprint of the new building that serve the existing hospital complex while providing uninterrupted service. The project will also include a new main pedestrian entrance to the hospital complex for students and staff, a small number of new parking stalls, and a new truck service dock constructed in a way that minimizes the impact to the use of the existing facility.
