Deer Grove Forest Preserve
In order to compensate for permitted losses of wetlands as a result of an expansion of O’Hare International Airport, GRAEF and Conservation Design Forum, Inc. (CDF) formed a team to evaluate natural resources at Deer Grove Forest Preserve near Palatine, IL. The evaluation team includes wetland scientists, biologists, soil scientists, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, and ecologists.
In 2007 and 2008, the team determined the extent of existing wetlands and identified opportunities for restoration and enhancements to wetland and upland plant communities. A more cursory review was completed on the west portion of the preserve in 2007, with the intent of a more thorough study in 2009. Our goals for this project are to develop a restoration and maintenance strategy that will meet the compensation requirements for offsite wetland impacts while also enhancing rare species habitat and restoring conservative plant communities. This is intended to increase both floral and faunal diversity within the preserve.
In addition, GRAEF will develop an ongoing analytical and tracking tool to assist the Forest Preserve District of Cook County in monitoring the health and development of these restored communities and predict potential outcomes of future restoration strategies prior to implementation.
