Waukesha Memorial Hospital Northwest Addition

Waukesha Memorial Hospital constructed a six-story 217,000 square foot addition that now houses a new cardiology unit, birthing center, pediatric unit, and additional patient rooms. The $48 million addition provides a new emergency department and expanded radiology department. GRAEF was retained to provide structural engineering services for this project.

A structural systems analysis was performed in the schematic phase of the project to determine the most efficient system. Each department was evaluated with different performance criteria and design requirements. The ultimate solutions satisfy the hospital’s needs by providing the necessary level of serviceability at the least cost.

The structural systems consist of cast-in-place concrete flat plates for the six-story tower, and composite steel beams with a concrete slab for the two-story emergency department. Both additions bear on spread footing foundations. The project also includes a curved entryway with a two-story atrium, and several canopies.
